When did one man last gain so much hatred as
Ariel Sharon?
My response to this talkback was as follows:
It is one of the most twisted ironies of modern times that the Israeli state has come to so closely resemble the Third Reich; an entire nation is "ghetto-ised", forced into enclaves under the control of the Israeli army; their police infrastructure deliberately targetted to remove any hope of controlling extremist elements - and these attacks can only enrage and encourage the extremists.
History will award Sharon a place somewhere between Hitler and Robespierre; it is bizarre that Bush seems so keen to take the appeasing role of Chamberlain. Even more strange is that, against this background, Blair, as he takes a role in support of African development, starts to look like the model of international democracy.
